Plotter Info

HP no longer refers to its line of Designjet technical printers as ‘plotters’ or ‘wide format plotters’ because these terms are inaccurate representations of how drawings are rendered and does not reflect the quality of today’s thermal inkjet printers.

Originally, plotters were developed as printing devices that drew images on paper, using ink pens or pencils, and rendered text and images as a series of point-to-point lines.

Technology has evolved, and today’s large format printers use inkjet printing technology to create a desired image on paper by placing droplets of liquid inks from an array of nozzles on a printhead. A printer’s resolution (often expressed as dots per inch, or DPI) is dependent upon a number of factors, including the number of nozzles, the accuracy of the placement of the droplets, and various qualities of the paper used for printing.

Inkjet technology allows both technical drawings and graphics prints to be more effectively rendered by optimizing line crispness, the density and consistency of fill area, and adding color accurately.

As technology evolved, some people in the market continued to refer to large format printers, especially technical printers, as “plotters” or “large format plotters”.
